Well since torch flow meters are metric. liters per minute and tank flow meter are cubic feet per hour they ain't never gonna match !!!!!

Mitered joints are almost a lost art. There are a number of reprints of layouts of various mitered joints. When I taught mechanical drawing, I would have my students develop various miters and intersections. I would then select one or two and actually lay out the joint; and, cut and fit the joint. I would have them do the drawings at a 1:1 scale so that I could cut out the drawing for the template. I used this as an exercise to show them how to take an idea that they thought of, draw it on paper, and then turn it into reality.

For my Hood I can only look thru a 13 shade lense, my eyes just can’t deal with a 11 which makes my eyes hurt.

Well said Dusty. I’m an aerospace quality engineer and nobody needs my skillsets and so I’m getting I to welding I hopes to have a SKILL that others need me again and have something they want from me. Either for trade stock or income I will have a skill others come to me for❤

You seem to really know your audience and man if people just listen to you it’s a recipe for true success!! I do get frustrated too and mostly because I feel stainless flows like water. That puddle flows like a lake rather than a sweet ⭕️ pond shape. And when I fill and chill it’s going to be grey grey Grey. So I need to keep practicing but I know there is success inside stainless somewhere for me. If you can tell us how to keep that irregular puddle flow back into a nice DIME shape that would be a blessing. Titanium flows like butter 🧈. It’s so smooth and easy to push out into the surrounding metal but stainless really acts like a rushing river going its own direction for me. 😂

Dusty, I have an idea for making ultralight aircraft kits. I obviously haven't looked at your class offerings, but I'll ask the question anyway... Is there a special type of aviation certification you prep students for or does your structural welding class (if any) cover that?

I’m wanting to get into welding if dabbled here an there I have pretty much all the equip,,I don’t have a welding table so I have been using a wooded work bench I made ,but purpose of this is I’m working in the refineries as a pipe helper and want to get into doing a combo welder but I also want to work with automotive stuff as my hobbies is building an working on my project car exhaust turbo stuff as well as body work ,what class would you suggest ,it’s hard to do a class setting as my time is short due to work and the prices are realllly high

Just use a 3rd coupon to rest the upper piece on and offset it by an inch or so from the end that you are tacking !

Not for nothing but CC handles these hard fouls better than LeCrybaby.

Instead of a belt sander which is full of what ever you been grinding use one of the dremel attachments with the diamond wheels, cheaper than a stand alone tungsten grinder, not only do you get set angles but consistency in a given angle.

Dusty.... ALWAYS 1/8 filler? I want to weld .090" or .060".... would you still use 1/8 rod for such thin material? I guess it would be FILL and CCCHHHHHIIIIILLL?

Could you cut the upper high bar on a bike, and attach it to the lower bike tube, to make a step thru bike?

*AWESOME!* goldsmith / master jeweler here in my 60's i love making things like that from 2x4's especially when i saw *Mr Benedetti* an engineer who worked for Northrup Grumman, he DIY'd his own stuff out of wood. he had a '68 Dodge Dart (which they gave to me after he passed away) and there was carburetor idle adjustments inside under the dash made out of wood and aluminum. he had many things made out of wood, car ramp, engine hoist, a neck contraption (which i saw similar being sold online) *mother is the necessity of invention But We Are The Fathers!* *Cerveza For You!* 🍺

just a tip when doing a lobster back like this, drill out the root of the fold and cut up to that. Leaves the sidewall completely intact and gives it a natural radius to distribute over.

Super tip. I always have trouble making sure I'm doing what I should be doing and no way to see except in the results - and a crummy weld can have a bunch of different causes so it would become a trial & error process to try to zero in on what I was doing wrong. I'm building this tomorrow!

Going into all this about camera techniques for filming welds, and that carrige set-up you've got going, wow. Your online welding classes, and the stuff you have done working day to day. I've been tig welding for close to thirty years, and I still find this quite informative and helpful. I'm teaching someone to tig and the details in this remind me of when I was in school, very good!

What if your machine is scratch start?

You can cut the glass smaller to make a "lens" for your phone... and then just use any of those bendy arm phone holders

Is it OK to be concave like that? I'll have beautiful consistent tig welds with perfect heat affected zones and a pretty gold color on stainless and yet I've been harassed by some teachers to make it convex if you can add more filler they say.

I've commented before that I was talking to an old retired welder. Which is rare because welders that have been welding for decades don't seem to be around these days! 🤔 He told me as he got into he's 50's he's hands started to shake so he put an auro type flat style matchbox car under he's hand. This made a huge difference keeping the weld straight, the right stand off , and smooth travel. He also said he always used as much PPE as possible even back in the 70s. Much to the amusement of what he called the cowboys welding with gloves and a mask!

Working in a shipyard one of the BEST pipe welders hands shook so bad I was sure he had parkinsons. It turns out the problem he had was with booze, but welds were perfect. Untill he offered the owner a beer at 9am coffee. gone....
